BRATES

BRATES

Brates are a delicious but less powerful alternative to goals that are a crucial element to a successful and enjoyable goal achievement program. Properly set goals can have one slight drawback.  You will achieve them.  While this is the reason you set goals, it also sometimes has two disadvantages.  Firstly, when you achieve the goal it is not quite as rewarding as you might have hoped because you expected to achieve it.  Secondly, you are a bit locked in. Sometimes after you have set a goal (especially if you have not done your ecological check well enough) you may find that you are not totally committed to what is needed in order to achieve the goal and so the cost of achieving the goal becomes too high.

Brates are very much like goals but for many people they are easier to set, less stressful and more fun.  They are also the ideal way to develop your goal setting skills.

Brates derive from the word celebrate because they are achievements you will celebrate and is an acronym of Balanced Revitalizing Achievements Triggering Enjoyable Success.

In other words brates are achievements that are balanced (ie covering all areas of life) and revitalising (they support your energy and motivation) and as you enjoy achieving them will contribute to your success.

To start the brates setting process take yourself into an environment where you can think about things you would like to celebrate.  This environment may be at your desk with pen at hand, it may be at dinner with your significant other or walking in the bush.  The environment should be relaxed and fun.  Let your mind flow and imagine various things that you would like to celebrate, not things you have to achieve, just things you would like to celebrate.  They may be minor or extremely ambitious.   You can then list them all.
